Released in the early 2000s, the Diablo II Battle Chest included Diablo II (2000) and the Lord of Destruction expansion (2001). It also carried a price tag of about $39.99 and came in a large box stuffed with guides and extras. This set became the go-to purchase for anyone looking to dive into the world of Sanctuary. Now, with everything digital, the old box stands as a reminder of how PC games used to be packaged — and it’s a sought-after piece for collectors.
Video Games & Consoles
The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is where it all started for a lot of us. First released in Japan back in 1983 as the Famicom, it showed up in the U.S. in 1985 and basically saved video games after the big crash. That gray box brought us Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Metroid, and hundreds more — over 700 titles in total. By the time it was done, more than 61 million systems were sold. For many collectors, the NES isn’t just a console, it’s the start of modern gaming history.

Hot Wheels
Yoshi from the 2020 Hot Wheels Mario Kart line! He’s in the B-Dasher kart, white body with blue wheels. This wave also included Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Bowser. Thing is, this isn’t the first time Hot Wheels teamed up with Nintendo—back in 2015 they dropped a Super Mario Bros. set with metal bodies and Real Riders wheels. Those earlier cars are now considered vintage and are highly collectible. I’ll be posting more on other Mario Kart castings and older crossovers soon, so stay tuned.

Aliens VHS History
When Aliens first came out on VHS, there were actually two different versions. The earlier one, from CBS/Fox Video in the late ’80s, kept things simple with just the bold ALIENS title across the front. That was the very first home video release, and collectors see it as the more valuable one today. A few years later, in the early ’90s, 20th Century Fox put out their own version with Ripley on the cover holding Newt and a flamethrower — the one a lot of people remember renting from video stores. Both are great to have, but the CBS/Fox edition is the scarcer of the two and usually the one collectors chase first.

StarCraft Battle Chest
The StarCraft Battle Chest hit shelves in 1998, bundling the original game with its expansion, Brood War. It sold for about $39.99 and came in one of those oversized PC boxes loaded with manuals and strategy guides. For a lot of players, it was the perfect way to jump into Blizzard’s sci-fi classic. Today, those big retail boxes are long gone, replaced by digital codes, making the Battle Chest a nostalgic collectible from the golden era of PC gaming.

Trading cards have crossed the line from a simple pastime to a seriously valuable and expensive hobby. The amounts some cards fetch are life-changing—selling for staggeringly large sums of money. They’ve even become a feature in a treasure-hunting book I’ll be talking about soon. It’s not too late to invest; the hobby is stronger than ever.
